Create Segments

With ReferralCandy, you can easily launch and manage multiple campaigns at the same time. To add customers to a campaign, begin by creating segments, each of which can serve as a unique target audience for your campaigns.

To handle segments within your ReferralCandy account, navigate to Contacts > Segments in the dashboard. Here, you'll find a list of all the segments you've created.

To create a new segment:

  1. Select "Create segment."
  2. Choose either a "Dynamic" or "Static" segment.
  3. Name your segment.
    • For a Dynamic segment, set conditions like lifetime spending or form submission status.
    • For a Static segment, add contacts using email addresses, a CSV file, or an integration like Mailchimp.

Set Rewards

With ReferralCandy, you can provide rewards and friend offers to incentivize successful referrals and purchases. Here are the various types of rewards you can offer to your Advocates:

  • Coupon: Provide store discounts by issuing a coupon code to your Advocates.
  • Cash: Send monetary rewards directly through PayPal.
  • Custom: Create unique rewards for Advocates, such as branded merchandise, loyalty points, or gift cards. Note that custom rewards require merchants to handle fulfillment.

Whenever ReferralCandy detects a successful referral, it automatically emails the Advocate to notify them of their eligibility for a reward. You’ll also receive an email notification, allowing you to process the information, log it in your database, and distribute the reward manually.

In addition to email alerts, you have three other ways to track referral information:

  • Referral Report: Accessible from your dashboard, this report consolidates all referrals, which you can review as needed.
  • API's Referrals Method: Use this API to retrieve data on referred purchases over time.
  • Webhook: By setting up a URL, you can receive real-time notifications containing referral details whenever a new referral is detected.

These rewards are fully customizable, allowing you to define the type of offer, set reward amounts, expiration dates, minimum purchase requirements, and the number of referrals needed. You can also control how many times a friend can purchase for an Advocate to qualify for rewards.

Changing the Minimum Purchase Amount

  • On the dashboard, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign.
  • Go to Reward, then click the Reward Settings tab.
  • In the Minimum Spending for reward eligibility field, enter an amount.
  • Note: This excludes taxes, shipping fees, and the discount amount applied to the referred friend's purchase.
  • Set the number of Referrals required for advocate reward. Then, select an option under Reward advocate for friend's field.
  • Click Save Changes.

Setting the Required Number of Referrals

  1. On the dashboard, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign.
  2. Go to Rewards then click the Reward Settings tab.
  3. In the Referrals required for advocate reward field, set the number of referred purchases an Advocate must make to receive a reward.
  4. Click Save Changes.

  1. On the dashboard, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign.
  2. Go to Rewards then click the Reward Settings tab.
  3. Click the Reward advocate for friend's dropdown. Select the number of repeat purchases you'd like to reward the Advocate for.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Customizing Your Referral Program

ReferralCandy handles referral communications for your customers, with options to customize them to reflect your brand's identity and style.

You can add your own logo, banner, primary color, and preferred font to ensure your referral communications align with your brand’s appearance. Additionally, you can tailor the default social media messages that Advocates use when sharing referral links on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

Within Store Settings, you can also personalize your referral program’s unique subdomain to make the referral link distinct for your Advocates.

The ReferralCandy dashboard offers a wide range of options to customize text, adjust styling, and enhance the look of your referral campaign emails and landing pages.

Set the Branding

  1. On the dashboard, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign.
  2. Go to Emails & Pages.
  3. Find your theme and click Edit.
  4. Go to the Branding tab. Branding tab.jpg On this tab, you can customize the following:
  • Logo - Upload in JPG or PNG format, with maximum file size of 10 MB. The recommended dimensions for the logo is 280px (width) and 140px (height). If it exceeds either, the logo is resized to a max width of 300px and a max height of 100px.
  • Banner - Upload in JPG or PNG format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB. The recommended dimensions for the banner image is 1400px by 500px.
  • Primary Color - Input a HEX color code to set a primary color.
  • Favicon - Upload a maximum of 192px square image in ICO, PNG, GIF, JPG or, SVG format. This appears as the website or tab icon in a user's browser when they view a page about the campaign.
  • Font - Select a custom font for your emails and pages.

Edit the Content of Emails & Pages

Personalize the subject line and content of your referral emails and pages to better fit your campaign’s style. You also have the option to modify specific campaign details like offer descriptions, portal link text, and call-to-action buttons.

To get started, navigate to your dashboard:

  1. Go to Campaigns and select the desired campaign.
  2. Click on Emails & Pages.
  3. Choose your theme and select Edit.
  4. Open the Content tab to make your adjustments.

On this page, you have the option to modify the text for these key referral emails:

  • Post-Enrollment Email (Invite Email)
  • Join Page
  • Reminder Email
  • Win-back Email

After personalizing the content of your emails and pages, you can preview how everything looks and functions on both desktop and mobile. For email previews, you can also send a test email to your own address to check the appearance directly in an inbox.

Edit All Text

To modify the complete content of all available emails, pages, and widgets, navigate to the bottom of the left-side panel and select one of the following options:

  • View All Content – Access additional content, including invite, engagement, and notification emails, as well as Advocate account pages.
  • Edit All Text – Make changes to all text across your emails, pages, and widgets.
  • Enter Developer Mode – Edit the HTML code for a deeper level of customization across your emails, pages, and widgets.

Editing the Default X, Facebook, and WhatsApp Sharing Message

Personalize the default messages and images that Advocates see when sharing their referral link on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and WhatsApp.

To update your social media sharing settings:

  1. In your dashboard, navigate to Campaigns and select the relevant campaign.
  2. Go to Social Media Messages to adjust your sharing settings for Facebook, X, or WhatsApp.

For Facebook

  • Select the Facebook tab.
  • Customize the default sharing message and image, with a live preview available as you edit.
    • Update the Facebook share card title.
    • Edit the Facebook share card body text.
    • Add an image to the sharing card: either upload a Custom image from your device or choose Default Logo to display your logo as the card’s image.
  • You can also modify the title and message that appear if your campaign is paused or stopped.
  1. Once you're satisfied with your edits, click Save Changes.

Note: Images should be 1200px by 630px in JPG or PNG format, with a maximum file size of 1MB.

For X (formerly Twitter)

  1. Select the X tab.
  2. Adjust the default sharing message and image, with a preview shown as you edit.
    • Add your X handle to include it in the tweet.
    • Customize the X message content.
  3. To enable an X card, check the Include X Card Support box. Once enabled, you can:
    • Modify the X share card title.
    • Update the X share card description.
    • Upload a custom image by clicking Upload logo to add an image from your device.

When finished, click Save Changes.

Recommended image size: 800px by 418px, in JPG or PNG format, up to 1MB.

For WhatsApp

  1. Go to the WhatsApp tab.
  2. Personalize the default WhatsApp message and image, with a real-time preview available.

After completing your edits, click Save Changes.

Customizing Your Referral Program’s Unique Subdomain

Each Advocate who qualifies under your segment criteria and joins your referral campaign receives a personalized referral link.

ReferralCandy automatically creates unique, campaign-specific links for each Advocate. They can share these links with friends via their share page, and the system tracks when Advocates share their links through email or social platforms.

A sample referral link might look like this: https://yourstore.refr.cc/campaign/u/alice.

  • The initial part (https://yourstore.refr.cc/) is based on your account’s Store URL, and you can modify the subdomain (e.g., "yourstore").
  • The second section (campaign) corresponds to your campaign's URL.
  • The final part (u/alice) is the Advocate’s username, which they can update on their rewards page at any time.

To customize the subdomain for referral links:

  1. Go to My Store > Store Settings on your dashboard.
  2. Enter your preferred subdomain in the Referral Program Unique Subdomain field.

    Inviting Customers to Your Referral Program

If you have an existing customer list you’d like to invite to join your referral program, you can use the Import Contacts feature to send them an invitation email.

Step 1: Select a Segment

Before starting the import, choose a segment for your contacts. Go to Contacts > Import on the dashboard and either select an existing segment or create a new one.

Note: All contacts, whether manually imported or not, are automatically included in the All Customers prebuilt segment. Imported contacts will be added to a static segment.

Step 2: Upload or Add Contacts

Click the Add Contacts dropdown and pick your preferred import method. You can use multiple methods during import:

  • Import from Mailchimp
  • Upload a CSV file
  • Add a Customer by Email

After selecting contacts, they’ll be queued for import. Review the list carefully before confirming. To remove an imported contact or list, click the trash bin icon under Actions. Once satisfied, click Import.

A popup will guide you through enrolling your imported contacts in your campaign. Click Next to continue.

Depending on the number of contacts, the import process may take some time. You can track your updated contacts list on the Contacts page.

Step 3: Set the Segment as Your Campaign’s Target Audience

To enroll your imported contacts in the referral program, designate their segment as the campaign’s target audience. Once a segment is targeted, contacts within it are immediately enrolled and added to the Advocates list.

The enrolled contacts will receive an invite email with their unique referral link and sharing options, allowing them to begin referring friends.

More Ways to Invite Customers

Now that you're familiar with the standard referral journey, you'll be pleased to discover several additional methods for your customers to join your referral program:

  • Share Your Portal Link: Promote your referral program through your homepage or in newsletters.
  • Set Up Widgets: Use widgets to enhance visibility and engagement with your referral program.
  • Enable a Post-Purchase Popup Widget: This widget displays immediately after a customer completes a purchase, prompting them to enroll in your referral program.

Note: Ensure your referral campaign is active for the post-purchase popup to function.

Embed a Signup Page

ReferralCandy allows you to host an embedded signup page directly on your website. The embedded signup page widget enables you to:

  • Integrate an iframe for the signup widget on any page.
  • Include a personal sharing widget on your customers' account pages.

You can add a signup page to an existing page or create a dedicated one for your referral program, effectively encouraging customers to join and increasing your Advocates.

  1. Go to Campaigns > Select Your Campaign on the dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Widgets.
  3. In the Embedded Signup section, click Copy to save the iframe code snippet to your clipboard, which includes the refcandy-candyjar script.

Embed a Floating Referral Widget

You can also place a referral widget anywhere on your site to enable visitors to join your referral campaign.

Before you begin, keep in mind:

  • You might need a developer's assistance for this setup.
  • Your platform should support the addition of HTML or JavaScript snippets.
  • Steps may vary based on the eCommerce platform you’re using.

To Embed the Referral Widget:

  1. Go to Campaigns > Select Your Campaign in the dashboard.
  2. Click on Widgets.
  3. In the Referral Widget section, copy the code snippet to your clipboard, which includes the refcandy-poprocks script.
  4. Paste this code just before the tag on your store's page.

For Shopify Merchants:

  1. Go to the Shopify Admin page and select Online Store, then click on Themes.
  2. Locate your active theme and click on Customize.
  3. Access the three-dot menu and choose Edit Code.
  4. In the Layout section, select theme.liquid and paste your code snippet at the bottom of the page.
  5. Click Save and check your site to ensure the widget is functioning properly.

Customizing Your Referral Program Emails and Pages

ReferralCandy manages the distribution of referral communications to both Advocates and their friends, allowing you to personalize these emails and pages to align with your branding and aesthetic.

You can modify the subject lines and the content of your referral emails and pages, as well as adjust campaign-specific elements like offer text, portal link text, and call-to-action buttons.

To make these changes:

  1. Navigate to Campaigns > Select Your Campaign on the dashboard.
  2. Click on Emails & Pages.
  3. Locate your theme and select Edit.
  4. Proceed to the Content tab.

To Edit All Text:

If you wish to update all available content across emails, pages, and widgets, scroll to the bottom of the left-side panel and click on:

  • View All Content - This option allows you to access additional materials, including invite, engagement, and notification emails, as well as Advocate account pages.
  • Edit All Text - This option enables you to revise the text in your emails, pages, and widgets.

Enter Developer Mode - This allows you to modify the HTML code for your emails, pages, and widgets.
